The Harmonious Pigs Reed Trio consists of Susan Butler on oboe, Shauna Barker on clarinet, and Benjamin Glossop on bassoon. Their repertoire of light and interesting music is a joy to hear! Their programs offer a wide range of musical delights from the 18th to 21st centuries, including some light classics and jazzy tunes with commentary.
Ben Glossop is the Principal Bassoonist of the Ottawa and Kingston Symphony Orchestras and is an extra with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. A fixture in the Ottawa freelance scene, he also plays with the Bel Canto Wind Quintet, the Prisme Ensemble, and the Ayorama Wind Quintet. He is a composer and singer-songwriter and recently released the album Fever Lines, his music for reeds and strings on the Cansona Arts Media label. An enthusiastic educator, he co-leads the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra-Carleton University Ensemble in Residence program and often conducts wind sectionals for local Ottawa Orchestras. Along with other members of the Bel Canto Wind Quintet Ben enjoys bringing engaging music to people with exceptionalities at the Lotus Centre for Special Music and at the National Arts Centre.
Shauna Barker won the Principal Clarinet position of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra in 2008. She is a regular extra musician in the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and is on faculty in both Universities in Ottawa: uOttawa as part time Professor and Wind Sector Head, and at Carleton University as Performance Instructor and Ensemble in Residence. In addition to her orchestral positions, Shauna belongs to many chamber ensembles, namely the Ayorama Wind Quintet and the Bel Canto Quintet, and of course, the Harmonious Pigs. Shauna holds a private clarinet studio that she teaches from home, or remotely.
Freelance oboist Susan Butler plays with many ensembles in the Ottawa area. In addition to the Harmonious Pigs trio, Susan is principal oboist of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra Quintet, which is currently the Ensemble-in-Residence at Carleton University. She is often seen in performance with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Thirteen Strings, l’Ensemble Prisme, and the Ottawa Choral Society. She is also a dedicated teacher, working with music students of all levels in her private studio in Deep River, Ontario. In addition to her work as an oboist, Susan is an accomplished recorder player, piano accompanist, and arranger.
